BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Five airports in North Dakota will receive federal grants totaling $17.2 million that are expected to be used in construction and safety projects.

The airports in Minot, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Bowman and Jamestown have been awarded the grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The funds are expected to help the airports keep up with increased boardings.

Minot International Airport will be getting the largest grant. The $8.9 million will go toward completing the third construction phase of one of its taxiways.

The airports in Devils Lake and Jamestown are expected to use their grants to buy aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicles.

Boardings in North Dakota airports have nearly doubled during the last decade.
