FARGO (KFGO-AM) - A bill in the North Dakota Legislature would prohibit the use of sobriety checkpoints. The Republican-sponsored measure says law enforcement may not perform a traffic stop unless the officer has "reasonable suspicion" of a violation.
Senator Tom Campbell of Grafton says sobriety checkpoints are a nuisance; especially when they're scheduled to coincide with events like concerts and festivals. Campbell says he considers sobriety checkpoints an invasion of privacy.
Campbell says he thinks tougher laws and the use of public service campaigns would be more effective against drunk driving. He says he expects law enforcement to oppose the measure.
