FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- The Salvation Army has kicked off its 124th Red Kettle campaign.

"When we see these red kettles, we see people of all means and stations in life stepping forward to contribute and volunteer. What an inspiration," said Kettle Chairman Morrie Lanning.

Last year more 7,000 people volunteered for a combined 22,000 hours.

This year, half of that time is already scheduled. But that means there is still plenty more to fill.

"This year we need 7,000 again to help ring the bell for 10 hours a day on 34 sites, 6 days a week for the next 34 days," Lanning said.

What's the motivation? For three groups, it’s competition.

Realtors, firefighters, and police officers battle each year for a good cause. Daryl Braham is on "team realtor".

"Giving back to the community is what realtors are all about and it's what we stand for. We build communities and we recognize the need. We also recognize an opportunity to have some fun," Braham said.

Last year their group alone raised more than $26,000.  But it wasn't enough to beat the firefighters.  Bragging rights and now a trophy are on the table.

This year's goal of $870,000 is the highest yet. But with lots of local support, the Salvation Army is confident that they will reach it.

"$870,000 from Fargo–Moorhead, that's our goal. It's to help them to get there so that's what we want to focus on," said Braham.

If you want to volunteer to ring the bell, you can now sign up online at salvationarmynorth.org.
