FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- A lawyer representing same-sex couples in North and South Dakota sees a US Supreme Court ruling striking down appeals of five states seeking to ban it as a significant victory.
Joshua Newville says it effectively means that same-sex marriage is now allowed in 30 states. Appearing on KFGO'S "Jack Sunday Show," Newville said the high court may have to rule again if an appeals court declares the laws in any of the other 20 states unconstitutional. He says his clients in North Dakota and South Dakota remains in limbo.
Seven couples in North Dakota sued the state in June over the voter-approved gay marriage ban. They say its unconstitutional. Another lawsuit asks that same-sex marriages performed elsewhere be recognized in the state.
