WASHINGTON (KFGO-AM) - Federal investigators say no mechanical problems were found in a post-accident investigation of an airplane crash that killed former North Dakota Air National Guard fighter pilot Bill Cowden.

Cowden died June 1 while flying a Russian aerobatic plane during an air show in Stevens Point, Wisc.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the airplane was pointed nearly straight down when it spiraled into the ground. The plane's engine was located in a crater 2-1/2 feet deep.

A handheld GPS and video camera found in the wreckage will be sent to a lab for analysis.

Cowden was a Delta Airlines pilot and frequent volunteer at Fargo Airsho.
