FARGO (KFGO-AM) - A Fargo real estate agent is accused of stealing more than $50,000 in cash and jewelry from the home of a neighbor and family friend.

Cass County prosecutors say Charles Carney took "multiple pieces of jewelry" and around $24,000 in cash.

The victim's attorney, Randy Stefanson, tells KFGO News Carney was a trusted friend who had a key and "carte blanche" access to the property.

Lt. Joel Vettel says police tracked down some of the stolen jewelry at local pawn shops. “What’s alarming is that someone would take advantage of somebody who’s obviously a trusted friend” Vettel said. “He was utilizing and manipulating her.”

Carney has been charged with two counts of felony theft.

The North Dakota Real Estate Commission is aware of the allegations. Executive Director Pat Jergenson says disciplinary action against carney would not be taken unless he's convicted.
