HANKINSON, N.D. (AP) -- The City Council in the southeastern North Dakota community of Hankinson has given initial approval to a sex offender ordinance after an offender moved to town from South Dakota.
The proposal would prohibit a registered sex offender from living within 800 feet of a school, child care facility, park, playground or other place where children congregate.
An offender also would be barred from loitering within 400 feet of a ``child safety zone.''
The Richland County Sheriff's Office says a high-risk sex offender who served 15 years in South Dakota's State Penitentiary for assaulting a minor in Brookings County recently moved to Hankinson.
Authorities say the 54-year-old man refused to undergo sex offender treatment while in prison.
The ordinance could get final approval May 5.
