BISMARCK, ND. (KCND AM) -- A Grand Forks state senator has a proposal to hold down tuition costs at the state’s colleges and universities.

Republican Ray Holmberg is proposing that a percentage of new money the 2015 legislature gives to the University System be dedicated to instructional costs.

Holmberg says he wants that money spent in the classroom, not in administration.

He says his proposal comes on the heels of the board of higher education’s latest decision on tuition.

Holmberg says some lawmakers he’s talked to are thinking about having the legislature set tuition rates.

That’s something the legislature used to do, until the higher education roundtable recommendations were adopted nearly 15 years ago.
