FARGO (KFGO-AM) Over the objections of Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker, city commissioners approved tax breaks for developers of the former Union Storage and Transfer complex on NP Avenue.

Plans are to convert the historic building to upscale apartments and commercial-retail space. Walaker voted against the plan because of rail safety concerns. The mayor says the 85-year old building is too close to the BNSF main line. Walaker says he wouldn't live there.  He's "very, very concerned" about recent oil train derailments that happened in Quebec and Casselton.

One of the developers, John Williams assured commissioners the safety of tenants is a priority.

The $9 to $12 million project is expected to start in June with occupancy by the fall of next year.
