FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- Fargo School Board member John Strand says he'll run for the City Commission. He made his announcement Tuesday on KFGO's Jack and Sandy show. Strand says he'll be an advocate for affordable housing, affordable taxes and fees for seniors and those on fixed incomes. He also supports a downtown convention and performing arts center.
There are two open City Commission seats for this June's election. Commissioner Tim Mahoney has filed for a third term. Last week, Commissioner Brad Wimmer announced he decided to challenge incumbent Mayor Dennis Walker. Anthony Gehrig has also filed to run. Gehrig lost a bid for City Commission two years ago.
Strand, co-owner of the High Plains Reader, was first elected to the Fargo School Board in 2008, edging out one of four incumbents who were up for re-election. He won re-election two years ago, garnering the most votes of any of the candidates.
Filing deadline for this year's city election is April 7 at 4pm.
