FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple has awarded the state's highest honor to the family of a businessman and community leader who founded what is now the Greater North Dakota Chamber. Herman Stern is the 40th recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award. Stern was known for his work in a family clothing store that has been in business for 130 years.

He first became manager of the Straus Clothing Store in Valley City in 1910, where he remained for 70 years. Stern died in 1980. Stern founded the Greater North Dakota Association in 1924 and served as the organization's first president.

He also was pivotal in starting the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City. Dalrymple presented the award Thursday in Fargo.
