Medical marijuana has limited support from Clay Co. sheriff

MOORHEAD, Minn.  Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist says he could support legislation that allows medical marijuana as long as it contains safeguards to keep it out of the wrong hands.

A group of Minnesota lawmakers wants to legalize the drug for medical purposes.

Bergquist says he would "be okay" if the marijuana was dispensed by doctors for legitimate reasons, but, he says, there would have to be limits. “I don’t think anybody would disagree with anyone who has cancer that it would really, really help.” Bergquist said. “But the doctor should be the one to say ‘you know what? This is the only thing’ (that works) and I would be okay with that.”

Recent discussions have centered on whether the drug could be permitted in pill, liquid or inhaler form, but smoking it would be prohibited.

The Minnesota Medical Association meets Tuesday to discuss whether it plans to endorse its use.
