FARGO (KFGO-AM) - The City of Fargo is rolling out a high tech parking system within the month that will give drivers more options to pay by using technology tied to their license plates.

Digital pay stations will be installed at three downtown city parking lots, one on NP Avenue and two on 2nd Avenue North.

City planner Joe Nigg says the pay stations says the parking system uses license plate recognition and allows you to pay with cash, credit or debit cards. He says the set-up will make parking much easier, reduce operating costs and cut down on parking cheaters:

Once the digital stations are installed, a pay-by-smart phone app will be added. A validation system set up through downtown businesses which offers a parking discount will also be added.

To fast-track Fargo's move to the new system, the city's new parking operator, Interstate Parking Company agreed to cover the $35,000 cost of the three digital pay stations.

Similar units are already in use at NDSU and MSUM.
