GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The University of North Dakota is among 13 university teams selected to participate in the Federal Aviation Administration's research project on unmanned aerials systems.
The so-called Center of Excellence group will focus on the safe integration of drones into the national airspace. The FAA expects research to begin by September 2015 and the group to be fully operational by January 2016.
Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota says the UND selection shows the FAA's confidence and long-term investment "in North Dakota ingenuity."
Others school selected were Mississippi State University, Drexel University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Kansas State University, Kansas University, Montana State University, New Mexico State University, North Carolina State University, Oregon State University, University of Alabama-Huntsville, University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and Wichita State University.
