MOORHEAD (KFGO-AM) - Fire caused heavy damage to portions of a three story apartment building at 3010 18th Street South in Moorhead Wednesday afternoon.
Jeff Wilson, his wife, and infant son were among several dozen residents who evacuated safely. Wilson was asleep and woke up to his wife screaming there was a fire.
Wilson was last to leave and says the hallway was filled with smoke so thick he had to hold his breath to escape.
Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Wallin says smoke could be seen from a mile-and-a-half away and fire crews found heavy flames burning from the exterior of the building from the ground to the top floor. Two apartments had heavy fire damage and others had smoke damage. Wallin says initial reports indicated the fire started on a second floor balcony but it's too soon to determine a cause.
Some residents were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
