HAWLEY (KFGO-AM) - The Baer Brothers poultry farm near Hawley is under quarantine after signs of avian flu were detected in the hen laying operation Monday.
Federal investigators have posted warning signs around the farm, telling people to stay away. Further testing is underway at the National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa, the only facility in the U.S. authorized to confirm the presence of the highly contagious virus.
It's likely all 300,000 birds will have to be destroyed. At least one supermarket chain in the FM area is taking eggs off the shelves from the Baer farm as a precaution. Hornbacher's will be restocking with a substitute brand from the region and those eggs should be on the shelves soon.
