BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A top federal regulator says a pipeline that spilled 30,000 gallons of oil into Montana's Yellowstone River was split at the site of an exposed weld where the line crosses beneath the river.
The damaged section of line was pulled from the river Wednesday.
U.S. Department of Transportation pipeline safety administrator Tim Butters says it will be sent to a laboratory in Oklahoma for analysis.
Also Wednesday, federal officials posted an advisory warning pipeline companies nationwide about potential damage from severe flooding. Butters says it's up to companies to make sure their pipelines are safe.
The January 17th Yellowstone spill contaminated water supplies for about 6,000 residents in nearby Glendive and raised concerns in communities downstream in North Dakota.
The line is owned by Bridger Pipeline LLC of Wyoming.
