FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- A survey finds support for more surveillance cameras in downtown Fargo.
The Downtown Community Partnership found nearly 75% of the 71 responses returned by DCP members support expansion of the surveillance camerass. In response to increased crime, several were installed in 2012 and several more were added the following year. While recent data is not available, police saw crimes drop in those areas once the cameras came on line.
More than 52% of the survey respondents say the existing surveillance system has made the downtown feel safer, while 25% say the surveillance cameras are an intrusion of civil liberties.
The majority of those surveyed believe additional camerass should be installed between NP and 3rd Avenue North and in the alleyway between 2nd and 4th Avenues North.
DCP President and CEO Mike Hahn says a formal endorsement of the expansion will be presented to the City Commission within several weeks. Like the earlier camera installation, the cost of more surveillance equipment would have to be picked up by the city.
