FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- Fargo Police Officer Zach Messmer has been disciplined for getting into a spat on Facebook. A citizen filed a complaint after Messmer told him he should "do us all a favor and hang yourself". The officer was responding to a remark critical of police after an officer-involved shooting in Grand Forks.
Lieutenant Mike Mitchell says Messmer had the choice of receiving a written reprimand or taking part in educational-based discipline. "Zach used to be a school teacher and he wants to try to teach some of our officers not to make the same mistake he did, so he's going to be doing some work with our recruit officers and up at the academy during a block on ethics, talking about how easy it is to fall into that trap" said Mitchell.
Mitchell says Messmer admitted almost immediately he made a poor choice.
