MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - Clay County, Minn. prosecutors say a 15-year-old girl who appeared in a sex video made by two hockey players was thrown aside "like garbage" after the video was made. Thomas Carey and Brandon Smith are accused of possessing and distributing child pornography.
Prosecutors are disputing defense attorneys' claims that the charges should be dismissed. In court documents, they say USHL hockey players are "acutely aware" of a circle of "groupies" who are used by the players to "satisfy themselves sexually" and brag about it.
The newly-filed documents say the video and pictures were distributed to people in several states including Iowa, South Dakota and Pennsylvania.
The defense wants a judge to dismiss the charges for abuse of prosecutorial discretion.
The video was made in a Moorhead motel room in February, 2014 when Carey and Smith were each 19 years-old and played for the USHL’s Lincoln Stars.
