WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) State health officials say radioactive oil field waste has been illegally dumped in western North Dakota.
Officials on Thursday said up to 100 filter socks were found in a property in within the city limits of Williston. The socks are the nets that strain liquids in the oil production process.
Scott Radig with the Division of Waste Management says the cleanup is scheduled to begin Friday.
Radig says the waste was found in a facility used by Green Diamond Environmental Trucking Services, LLC. He says the company has told state investigators that another corporation dropped the socks at the site.
The trucking company has hired a contractor for the cleanup.
The socks are banned for disposal in North Dakota. They're supposed to be hauled to certified facilities in other states.
