ALEXANDRIA, MINN. (KFGO AM) -- An Alexandria man has died after the enclosed ATV he and his grandson were in broke through the ice of Lake Andrew near Alexandria Tues. night and sank to the bottom.
James Minnerath died after he and his two year-old grandson were airlifted to Twin Cities hospitals. Family members believe that Minnerath took his grandson onto the lake after they plowed snow for neighbors.
Minnerath's wife called the sheriff's office after she no longer heard the engine of the ATV. A retired deputy sheriff who lives nearby found a hole in the ice and contacted the Douglas County Sheriff's Dept.
It was Minnerath's 50th birthday. The boy is in critical condition.
