FARGO (KFGO-AM) - Fargo city commissioners have approved bids totaling $103 million for expanson of the city water treatment plant. The project had to be re-bid after construction estimates came in higher than available funding last September.
The city was able to shave some costs and new bids recently came in more than $13 million dollars lower. The expansion and upgrades are needed to treat Sheyenne River water released from Devils Lake after the state installed pumps on the lake to control flooding. The water contains impurities the plant cannot handle now.
City Enterprise Director Bruce Grubb told commissioners the water treatment capacity will also increase. He says the project positions Fargo well to handle water needs of Fargo and West Fargo well into the future. He calls it a "win win."
West Fargo has been discussing the possibility of sharing water treatment with Fargo but has not yet made a decision.
