FARGO (AP) - An 18-year-old Grand Forks man is facing federal charges in the overdose deaths of two people in the Grand Forks area.

Kain Schwandt pleaded not guilty Thursday to conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death. A trial date has not been set.

Grand Forks police announced last month they were investigating several overdose cases involving powdered fentanyl, a powerful synthetic morphine. It's not clear how many people were sickened by the drugs.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Alice Senechal told Schwandt the conspiracy involves fentanyl, heroin, Xanax, Ecstasy and marijuana.

Schwandt was ordered to refrain from contacting any defendants or witnesses.
