BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO-AM) The number of sheep and lambs in North Dakota is down from a year ago hitting a record low.
A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that the state's sheep and lamb inventory on Jan. 1 totaled 64,000 animals, down 2,000 from the previous year.
The breeding herd totaled 50,000 animals, unchanged from last year. The marketing herd decreased 2,000, to 14,000 head.
The 2014 lamb crop totaled 55,000 head, unchanged from 2013.
The report also shows that shorn wool production last year also hit a record low with 460,000 pounds, down 30,000 from 2013. Online: www.nass.usda.gov
