North Dakota cattle and calf inventory down 6 percent

FARGO, N.D. (KFGO-AM)  The number of cattle and calves in North Dakota is down 6 percent from last year.

The Agriculture Department says there were 1.65 million cattle and calves in the state on January 1st. Beef cows totaled 904,000 head, down 2 percent over the year. Dairy cows were down 6 percent, to 16,000 head.

The 2014 calf crop in the state totaled 860,000 head, down 3 percent from 2013.

All cattle on feed for slaughter in North Dakota feedlots totaled 45,000, up 13 percent.
