BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO-AM) - The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says its annual midwinter waterfowl survey indicates more birds in the state compared to the past couple of winters.

Migratory game bird biologist Mike Szymanski says about 87,700 Canada geese were observed on the Missouri River, and another 30,600 were scattered on Nelson Lake.

He says 145,200 Canada geese and mallard ducks were tallied statewide. That compares with 71,500 birds in last year's midwinter survey.

Szymanski says conditions leading up to this year's survey in January were highly variable, but lower-than-average snow conditions resulted in more birds in the state.
