FARGO (KFGO-AM) - The driver of a car who ended up on Red River ice near the Midtown Dam in Fargo early Thursday morning was arrested for DUI.
Police say the driver lost control on 2nd street, struck a tree, plunged down an embankment and onto the ice. He drove across the ice to the Moorhead side in an unsuccessful attempt to get off the river and came back to the Fargo side where his car got stuck in slush. The driver managed to get out of the vehicle and call for help. Firefighters wearing specialized rescue suits ventured onto the ice, attached a rope to the car and a tow truck pulled it to shore.
Authorities say the nearby low-head dam, where there's open water and strong currents, and creates dangerous ice conditions.
