FARGO (KFGO-AM) The dangerous cold has local homeless shelter's full and even Fargo-Moorhead churches that volunteer on a weekly basis to handle those with no other place to spend the night are running at near capacity.
29 congregations are now part of the Churches Sheltering Project, in its fourth year.
Lois Ustanko,a program coordinator, says for the last couple of weeks, 27 people have been housed nightly, just 3 shy of capacity. She says there's also an interesting change in demographics. Churches are seeing 10 to 12 women nightly, double the previous years. Ustanko says at this point "we're not quite sure why."
The sheltering project holds twice-a-month training for those interested in volunteering. The next session is January 15 from 7 pm to 9 pm at First United Methodist Church in Fargo. About 1,000 people have went through the training program.
