It was a two-ring day for a couple of North Dakota State offensive linemen Saturday.
After winning a fourth straight FCS national championship in Frisco, Texas, Bison seniors Zac Johnson and Jesse Hinz dropped to one knee and proposed to their girlfriends on the turf of Toyota Stadium during the raucous postgame celebration.
Each won a championship ring, and gave an engagement ring to their girlfriends.
Both women said "yes," by the way.
"Winning a fourth national championship and being able to share that with my now-fiance was an amazing weekend I'll never forget," Johnson told Y-94's "Morning Playhouse" Monday. Y-94, like KFGO, is owned by Midwest Communications.
Johnson, a Fargo South graduate, said he planned to propose only if the Bison defeated Illinois State. They did that, 29-27, thanks to a 5-yard touchdown run by quarterback Carson Wentz with 37 seconds remaining.
"My mother had the ring. She always had the ring and she was at the game, so that was the initial plan to do it when all the family gathered around after the game," Johnson said. "If we had won, I told my mother to slip me the ring secretly and I was going to drop to a knee and ask her to marry me."
If the Bison had lost, Johnson said he would have postponed popping the question.
"I wouldn't have been in the right mind-set to propose and I wanted it to be special," Johnson said, adding that he believes Hinz would've proposed either way.
Hinz is a senior from Beatrice, Neb.
"It was a very, very big moment for me, that's for sure," Johnson said.
