LARIMORE, N.D. (KFGO-AM) - An inspection by the North Dakota Highway patrol found nothing "mechanically" wrong with the bus involved in Monday's fatal accident with a train near Larimore, indicating driver error was the likely cause of the crash.
Lt. Troy Hischer says investigators will now examine the on-board data recorder of the bus that could reveal more information.
Hischer says results of an autopsy on the driver may also shed more light on the crash. He says the patrol is also following up on information that moments before the crash, the driver waved at someone he knew, a block from from the rail crossing where the collision happened. Hischer says that would support the belief the driver was alert and did not have a medical condition that would have affected his ability to stop or see the on-coming train.
