Former Fargo mayor is interested in appointment as interim city commissioner

FARGO (KFGO-AM) Former Fargo mayor Bruce Furness tells KFGO's Joel Heitkamp, if asked, he'd agree to serve as an interim city commissioner as the commission considers a special mayoral election in April.

Furness, who served as mayor from 1994 to 2006, says he has no intention of running for either of those positions. He does say somebody needs to be appointed and he would do it for a short time.

Commissioner Tim Mahoney is pressing for appointment of a 5th commissioner to serve until the election is decided. Since the death of Dennis Walaker, there's only been four commissioners and Mahoney, now acting mayor, says that's making it hard to do business. However the three other commissioners disagree and say an interim appointment is not needed.

Commissioner Dave Piepkorn says that's a "solution to a problem that doesn't exist". He sees it as an opportunity to show the public all four commission members can work together.

City commissioners would have to okay any recommended appointment.
