FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- When Fargo voters go to the polls in a special election this spring, they may be voting on more than electing a successor to Mayor Dennis Walaker who died earlier this month.
Interim mayor Tim Mahoney says the ballot may include elimination of a city charter amendent on the books since 1996 that wouldn't require future city commissioners to resign if they run for mayor. He says city commissioners may also vote Monday on whether to eliminate term limits. The limits were approved by the city commission in 1992 and can be altered or eliminated without a city wide vote. City commissioners can now serve 3-four year terms and one term as mayor.
Mahoney argues the resignation requirement and term limits results in the loss of "valued, experienced" city leaders.
It appears commissioners will set the special election for Tuesday, April 28. Decisions may be made at Monday's commission meeting.
