Bismarck, N.D. (AP) A North Dakota lawmaker wants to end the state income tax.
Representative Scott Louser says he'll introduce a bill to set it at 0 percent, rather than push for an outright repeal.
North Dakota's income tax has five brackets, with a top assessment of 3.22 percent. But with the state treasury now flush with an estimated $2 billion in reserves, the Minot Republican says it's time to put the roughly $500 million collected every year back in residents' pockets.
North Dakota would be the first state to eliminate its income tax since Alaska did it in 1980 after oil started flowing there. Six other states have no income taxes.
Mandan Republican Senator Dwight Cook says it's unclear if the GOP-controlled legislature "has the political will'' to do away with it.
