BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO-AM) Bismarck Mayor Mike Seminary is leading an effort to overturn a law on the books for 66 years that bans parking meters statewide.

He says it should be left up to cities to decide whether to use parking meters. Seminary says parking meters could help cities dealing with on-street parking issues in revitalized downtown's. He calls those parking problems "a very significant issue."

Seminary hopes to get the 2015 legislature to reverse the ban, approved by voters in 1948. He senses there's support from city and business leaders he's talked with.

Fargo City Commissioner and Parking Commission member Mike Williams is on board. He believes the decision should be left up to cities. Mayor Dennis Walaker is not sold on the idea. He says parking meters create problems for snow removal and he says the public hates them.
