The State Historical Society is requesting more than $3.5 million to address an erosion problem at the Double Ditch Indian Village historical site near Bismarck.
Officials say the erosion has plagued the site on the Missouri River since 2011.
Fern Swenson, the agency's director of archaeology and historic preservation, says erosion has caused five burials at the site to surface. She says the remains have been relocated.
Swenson says the proposal would protect an area that stretches approximately 1,900 feet along the river.
Historians believe Double Ditch was home to the Mandan Indians for nearly 300 years. The site gets its name from two distinct rises believed to be defensive fortifications.
