MOORHEAD (KFGO-AM) Moorhead Police Chief Dave Ebinger says it's time for the Clay County Jail to be replaced. During 2015 budget discussions with the City Council, Ebinger said that discussion needs to start next year. He said "I'm embarrassed by that jail, it's the oldest jail in the State of Minnesota...I would not want people to be put in there." Ebinger added that the Department of Corrections is going to close the facility down soon.
Ebinger says the City and Clay County, which partners with the jail, are "spending good money" for repairs on a building that needs to be replaced.
Earlier this year, the City Council and the Clay County Commission discussed a possible sales tax or property tax increase to pay for a new $30 million corrections center but no specific plans have surfaced.
