FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- A problem found with the levee construction near the El Zagal building in north Fargo will cost the city.
Workers found chunks of concrete and other items in the dirt which makes the dirt unusable. They will now have to remove and replace 1,400 truckloads of dirt in the levee. That will add $360,000 to the project, bringing the total cost to about $2.25 million.
Earlier tests on the site determined the dirt in the old levee could be reused. "The soil boring is only about a six or eight inch hole that we drill into the ground and it just must have missed all the pieces that we found when we stripped the top soil," said City of Fargo engineer, Rob Hasey.
Contractors don't expect this to add any more time to the project. In fact they say all of the dirt should be hauled in two weeks before the November 20th deadline.
