FARGO (KFGO-AM) -- Fargo City Commissioners are planning an outside review of the police department.

Deputy Mayor Tim Mahoney says its a result of recent criticism of Chief Keith Ternes, primarily by former officers. They've questioned his management style and the way he disciplines members of his department. Mahoney says he expects that law enforcement officers with no connection to Fargo Police will look at internal policies and procedures.

In a letter to the commission, Chief Ternes says he'd welcome an independent review to answer any concerns about morale and administrative oversight brought forth by what he says are a small number of former employees.

Ternes is also urging the commission to examine how he handled the internal investigation of Lt. Jeff Skuza. He committed suicide while administrators were deciding how he should be disciplined for not reporting that he discharged his taser.

Other city departments may also be analyzed in a separate review.
