FARGO (KFGO-AM) Fargo's Engineering Department will look into what it would cost to elevate a low spot of Elm Street to prevent frequent closures.
Public Works Director Ben Dow says since 2004, the roadway near El Zagel Golf Course has been closed 603 times. That includes 47 so far this year due to flooding.
Commissioner Dave Piepkorn requested the study. He says the closure is not just an inconvenience, there are also public safety issues and something needs to be done to address the problem.
City Engineer April Walker says because of unstable soil, the solution would require something similar to the 12th Avenue viaduct and estimates the construction cost at $10 million. That does not include engineering and design. She says
Next month, the commission will hear more about the cost of not only elevating Elm Street but raising low span bridges at 12th Avenue North and Broadway, both often closed because of Red River flooding.
