Grand Forks, N.D. (AP) A bigger share of county inmates at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center could mean taxpayers are paying more. The number of county inmates has increased by about 20 percent in recent years. That means there are less federal inmates. Jail Administrator Bret Burkholder says fewer federal inmates means fewer federal contracts to subsidize jail operations. Burkholder says boarding inmates from other jurisdictions generates between $1.5 and $2 million. He says without the revenue more of the cost burden falls to the local taxpayer. The average daily inmate population during the first half of 2014 has been around 180.
