FARGO (AP) - Cass County is receiving more than $6 million in federal funding to help pay for flood protection projects. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $4.2 million for home buyouts in Cass County, and $2 million for sewer system improvements in downtown Fargo. The Fargo area has dealt with the prospect of major flooding in four of the last six years. A record Red River crest in 2009 destroyed about 100 homes and set city and county officials on a path to get other susceptible homes off the flood plain. The current buyout project is targeting 38 properties in the county, for a total cost of nearly $16 million.
