MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO-AM) - About two-dozen Minnesota police chiefs and law enforcement officers met in Moorhead Thursday to talk about medical marijuana.

The group discussed a new legislative compromise that creates a limited clinical trial for people with severe illnesses. It would not permit smoking marijuana.

Andy Skoogman is executive director of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association. Skoogman tells KFGO News the group would oppose any bill that allows medical marijuana to be grown, or smoked, but Skoogman says the organization is not opposed to what he calls a “responsible and reasonable first step to try and find common ground.”

Moorhead Police Chief Dave Ebinger agrees that there is room for compromise. “I think it’s time that this issue is on the burner. I think it’s time we go out and find out some facts and find out the truth from the fiction.”

An earlier push to legalize medical marijuana was blocked; largely by opposition from law enforcement. Supporters of the compromise say they're confident about the chances of approval.
