BISMARCK (KFGO-AM) -- The US Marshal's service says an elderly woman tried to assault a member of Sen. Heidi Heitkamp's staff at her Bismarck office Thursday afternoon.
Heitkamp was not in the office at the time.
Police Sgt. Mark Buschena says a member of Heitkamp's staff met with the 62-year-old woman around 1:20 p.m. in the office at the William L. Guy Federal Building. Staff members told police they are familiar with the woman.
Buschena says sometime during the discussion the woman "grabbed the staff member by the shoulders and tried to swing at her.''
Authorities came to the office and restrained the woman. Marshal's Service Chief Deputy Dan Orr says nobody was hurt.
Orr says the woman was released and it hasn't been determined whether she will be charged with a crime. He says that decision will be up to the Burleigh County State's Attorney's office or the Bismarck city attorney.
Comment from Senator Heidi Heitkamp:
“I’m incredibly proud of my staff for working hard every day to help North Dakotans and offer crucial assistance. The work they do truly changes lives. And their work should never come at the expense of their safety. I greatly appreciate everyone in my Bismarck office and our law enforcement officers for responding so quickly to the incident today. The legal process is now taking place.”
