Gas sales tax up for a vote today

ST.PAUL, Minn. (KFGO AM) -- A vote is expected today in a key house committee on a bill that would add a second gasoline tax in Minnesota.

This one would be based on price at the pump rather than number of gallons purchased.

Legislative leaders and Governor Dayton are cool to the idea of any tax increase -- analysts say because it's an election year.

Darin Broton with the group "Move Minnesota" says when the legislature increased the gas tax in 2008, it was also an election year.

Republicans did, however, "punish" House members who voted to overturn then-governor Tim Pawlenty's veto of a gas tax increase.

One of them, Edina Representative Ron Erhardt, switched parties and now chairs the Transportation Policy Committee in the DFL-controlled Minnesota House.
