FARGO (KFGO-AM) - KFGO News has learned that a convicted con artist from the Twin Cities who duped investors in a high-profile fraud scheme is under federal investigation in North Dakota.
The case involves 67-year-old Gerald Greenfield, who was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison for his role in a $2.5 million condominium fraud conspiracy.
In March, Greenfield and another man escaped from the federal prison camp in Duluth; they were captured six days later.
Court documents filed by Greenfield's attorney, Frederic Bruno, say that just prior to the escape, Greenfield learned that he and his son were about to be indicted in federal court in North Dakota. Bruno said Greenfield believed he had received immunity from prosecution in exchange for pleading guilty to money laundering in Minnesota. Bruno wrote that Greenfield escaped because he believed the government had not held up its end of the plea agreement.
Federal prosecutors in Fargo say they have no comment on the investigation.
