MERCER, N.D. (AP) - The Mercer Rural Fire Protection District has been granted $73,000 in federal funds to purchase new equipment.
U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp says the money will allow firefighters to readily and safely respond to emergency situations.
Heitkamp has said that the train derailment in Casselton in 2013 reinforced the need to make sure first responders are well-equipped to do their jobs.
The Federal Management Agency granted the money to Mercer through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
The program helps fire departments and emergency medical service organizations purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment and vehicles.
