BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) -- Police say a 15-year-old baseball player has died after being struck by a ball in Bemidji.
The president of the Bemidji Youth Baseball League, Bruce Dahlin, says Zacharie Schaubhut lived in Des Moines, Iowa, but was living with his grandparents for the summer so he could play baseball in Bemidji.
It's believed Zacharie died from an undetected medical condition. The league said there was no sign of blunt force trauma from the impact of the ball.
Dahlin says there was no organized game or practice. Some teens and former players got together to play a game.
A post on the Bemidji Youth League Baseball Facebook page asks for prayers for Zach's family and friends.
"It is with a heavy heart that our Northern Heat family asks for prayers for the family & friends of Zacharie Schaubhut. May god's love heal your sorrow & may his peace replace your heartache with warm and loving memories. Zach has gone to play at that big field in the sky. May the skies be blue, the grass be mowed & the umpires make the right calls. Until we meet again..."
Police say the incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bemidji High School baseball field.
