Detroit Lakes (KRCQ) -- A 100 year old Detroit Lakes monument, which honors our service members, was re-dedicated after a restoration project on Memorial Day. Dozens gathered in the rain at Oak Grove Cemetery to see a wreath laid in front of the Grand Army of the Republic Statue at the entrance of the Oak Grove Cemetery and the Avenue of Flags display.
Members of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and Disabled American Veterans took part in the restoration and re-dedication.
Oak Grove Cemetery also celebrated 25 years with the Avenue of Flags on Display. The flags are donated by family members of service members. The flags are under guard 24/7 when they are flown. Local veterans groups started with just 40 flags. The display now includes over 800 flags.
