MINOT, N.D. (AP) - The city of Minot is getting a $6.1 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help protect the city's water treatment plant and keep it functioning during a flood.

The plant is the only source of drinkable water for the city, Minot Air Force Base and many rural residents in the area. More than 100,000 people were put on a boil order when the plant was impacted by Souris (SUR'-ihs) River flooding in 2011.

U.S. Senator John Hoeven says the FEMA money is the first installment of the $19.8 million federal share of the $26 million second phase of a project to improve flood protection for the plant. The city received a $2 million FEMA grant in 2013 for the first phase.
